Launch of the Planetary Health course

In partnership with the Planetary Health Alliance (PHA), the Online Planetary Health Course has been translated and updated into English. This version will be available for registration on the TelessaúdeRS-UFRGS’ moodle platform starting on January 18th. The course will be launched on the next day, January 19th at 6 pm BRT or 4 pm EST in a live online event.

The event, which is the result of a partnership between the Institute of Advanced Studies of   University of São Paulo (IEA-USP), TelessaúdeRS, Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina de Família e Comunidade (SBMFC), and the Planetary Health Alliance (PHA), will be broadcast on YouTube by TelessaúdeRS. Confirmed panelists include Dr. Samuel Myers, Max Zimberg, and Joanna Wagner from PHA and Harvard University; Mayara Floss (the course coordinator and family medicine trainee from Grupo Hospitalar Conceição), and Roberto Umpierre, the general coordinator of TelessaúdeRS. The event will be co-hosted by Ylana Rodrigues, the instructional designer and author of the course, and Joanna Wagner.

Dr. Sam Myers, Joanna Wagner, and Max Zimberg will be speaking as representatives of the Planetary Health Alliance. Dr. Myers is the Alliance’s Director, while Joanna and Max have worked closely with the Telessaúde team over the past year to assist with the translation of the original course into English. The Planetary Health Alliance is a consortium of over 200 universities, non-governmental organizations, research institutes, and government entities from around the world committed to understanding and addressing global environmental change and its health impacts.

Mayara Floss will be presenting and explaining the course, which covers themes like air pollution, heat, infectious diseases, water, mental health, nutrition, and activism. The course has a forum and the content is aimed to be an opportunity for free discussion.

Antônio Mauro Saraiva, IEA-USP representative, will speak about the 4th Planetary Health Annual Meeting that will be hosted at IEA-USP this year on April 25-30, 2021. Additionally, Maria Inez Padula, a family doctor and SBMFC representative will be talking briefly about the next Iberoamerican Conference of Family Doctors that will be hosted in Vitória-ES in Brazil on August 18-21.
