The Adolfo Lutz is a research institute of the State of São Paulo. With over 100 years, it was created to cope with the sanitary emergencies associated with the large migratory flow early in the XX century. The mission of the institute still aims the identification, surveillance and laboratory research to face potential biological and chemical hazards to the community. Its research groups are mostly dedicated to detection and characterization of emerging threats as well as relevant endemic and epidemic agents, participating in local and international networks. With 8 regional units, also provides laboratory support to the Brazilian health system.

We are looking for a passionate and dedicated young investigator interested in developing Antibody Engineering, Phage Display and Immune Repertoire Analysis with Focus on Rapid Antibody Biomarker Discovery in Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases.

The project will be funded by São Paulo Research Foundation – FAPESP (www.fapesp.br/en), through its Young Investigator Award Program (http://www.fapesp.br/en/6251). The award will be provided as a Research Grant with the maximum duration of 48 months. The selected candidate will receive a FAPESP Young Investigator Fellowship in the amount of R$ 8.152,20 monthly, free of income taxes.

The peer reviewed project of the selected Young Investigator may receive a Research Grant.

4.- Position Summary and required experience:

The research will emphasize PCR of immunoglobulin genes and surface expression libraries, expression of antibodies in E. coli and mammalian cells, characterization of antibody structure and function, directed protein evolution and display libraries, immunobiology of the antibody responses, and use of antibodies in diagnosis and therapy. It is fundamental to explore the generation and analysis of immune repertoires determined by Next Generation Sequencing.

Prerequisites for the position: doctorate in areas related to molecular biotechnologies, experience in immunology and molecular biology techniques, genetic engineering, DNA and protein analysis techniques, phage display, genomic sequencing and analysis of sequence data and protein structures.

4.1. Position Summary and expected research focus.

Recent advances in the generation and selection of antibodies from combinatorial libraries allow for the rapid production of antibodies from immune and non-immune sources. This project will focus on the construction of combinatorial antibody libraries from immune and non-immune sources as well as the construction of synthetic antibody libraries expressed on the surface of phage and selection of desired antibodies from the library against arbovirus. Antibodies will be selected by panning following production, purification and characterization. Focus will be given on antibody sequencing technologies for antibody discovery to detect and control emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.

4.2. Your profile and required skills:

PhD in molecular biotechnology with Post-Doctoral experience in the topics mentioned earlier supported by strong publications in the last five years. Language skills: English. To demonstrate successful experience as a researcher, after PhD, in a research group outside Brazil and internationally competitive.

The research will focus in some important concepts used in Bioinformatics and Systems Biology, such as: Biological Database; Alignment of Sequences and Phylogeny; Genome, Transcriptome and Proteome Analysis; Protect Modeling, Docking and Molecular Dynamics; Normal Mode Analysis; Network Theory.

Prerequisites for the position: Expertise on experimental design and data analysis related to genomes, transcriptomes, proteomes applied on human health and disease.

Prerequisites to develop protocols for computational analysis of metagenomics, the analysis of differential gene expression in microarray data and next-generation sequencing, and analysis of protein-protein interaction generated in proteomics experiments and Phage Display.

4.1. Position Summary and expected research focus.

The research focus is on arboviral infectious disease, diagnosis and vaccination using bioinformatics and systems biology approaches. Pathogens stimulate the immune system and Immune activation triggers several biological activities. Bioinformatics’ approaches provide a comprehensive way to a better understanding of immunity and disease pathogenesis. In view of the huge amount of data generated from high-throughput techniques and the inherent complexity of the immune system represent major computational and biological challenges. Our goal is to develop and apply bioinformatics and systems biology tools to unraveling novel insights into the mechanisms of infection and immunity. Focus will be given on sequencing technologies to rapid biomarkers discovery to detect and control emerging and re-emerging arboviral diseases.

The Adolfo Lutz Institute (IAL) is one of the Public Health Research Institutions of the State of São Paulo. More than 125 years old, it was created to address health emergencies associated with large migratory waves in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. With 12 regional laboratory centers, it promotes laboratory activities in technological scientific research and innovation for the São Paulo and Brazil Health Systems.

The institute’s mission also aims at identifying, monitoring and laboratory research to address possible biological and chemical risks to the community. The Parasitology and Mycology Center (PMC) develops specialized activities aimed, among others, at the detection and characterization of parasites, fungi and arthropods of medical importance and interest in Public Health; epidemiological studies; prospecting for new drugs applied to neglected diseases. Its research groups are primarily dedicated to detecting and characterizing emerging threats, as well as relevant endemic and epidemic agents, participating in local and international networks.

We are looking for a young researcher with international research experience in Geoprocessing Centers of Excellence interested in implementing Geotechnology areas applicable to the Public Health area to search for new scientific knowledge,

technological innovations and team building and new researchers.

Position Summary and required experience:

The opportunity is for the development of a project to implement the Geotechnology area, defined as one of the pillars in the structuring of the Institutional Research Development Plan (PDIP), integrated with other research and service areas of the IAL, in order to reach new scientific and technological solutions capable of providing quick responses to the strengthening of laboratory actions for Health Surveillance.

The aim is the development of emerging research lines for the IAL, focused on the application of Environmental Systems Modeling, as a way of measuring and interpreting geographic data, with the support of Remote Sensing, Geographic Information Systems, Algorithms and Analysis with application to Public Health. In order to carry out the area development plan, the selected Young Researcher will be awarded the construction of a Research Project that includes the training of new

researchers, professional and academic qualifications at the technical, master’s, doctoral and post-doctoral level. On the part of the IAL, the Young Researcher selected will have the participation of IAL technicians and researchers from different areas of knowledge in the creation of formative itineraries for the continuous use of

geotechnologies, providing resources and the structure for the progressive advancement of this new technology, knowledge and practice area at the Public Health Laboratory. It is hoped that the plan can also be established in the continuity movement for institutional action, for the production of knowledge in their own daily lives, even after the plan has ended.

Prerequisites for the position: Expertise in different geoprocessing methodologies of the modeling of environmental systems, remote sensing and geographic information systems. Experience in training researchers at postgraduate level geoprocessing and public health policy analysis.

The position will require collaborative work with PMC research groups and other

groups in the areas of epidemiology and entomology.

Profile and skills required: PhD in Geosciences with international Postdoc in Geoprocessing. Experience in the field proven by publications in the last 5 years.

We are looking for a passionate and dedicated young investigator with international experience in viral bioinformatics and metagenomics methodologies applied to the study of viruses of Public Health interest.

The award will be provided as a Research Grant with the initial duration of 48 months. The research will focus in important concepts used in Bioinformatic and Metagenomics, such as:

· Molecular biology and bioinformatics applied to next generation sequencing

Prerequisites for the position: International experience after PhD and expertize on molecular and bioinformatics methods in virology (detection, NGS sequencing, NGS sequence analysis, virus discovery, etc.).

Previous successful experience in massive parallel sequencing approaches with a priori knowledge (preparation of nucleic acid matrices, massive sequencing data analyses, viral metagenomics, virus discovery, use of bioinformatics tools) is a determining factor of the selection process.

Position Summary and expected research focus.

Development of research to monitor current pathogens and early detection of emerging viral infections. Study viral evolution and its impact in current treatment, diagnostic and monitoring tools. More specifically, you will initially be asked to apply tools to better characterize existing sequencing information, implement protocols for the analysis of existing sample repositories both to characterize current agents and to allow the discover of new agents. Develop viral metagenomics protocols to study human, non-human primates, rodents and mosquitoes applying methods of deep sequencing and sequence analyses. As the position requires collaborative work with members of the virology group and interdisciplinary collaboration with other groups (epidemiology and entomology), the ability to interact with others across scientific cultures will be important.
